300 mile bike tour of Wales and Anglesey including up and down Snowdon on bike!!!!

Last year I biked to Norfolk and back... And when I got home I set myself a challenge that I could bike up and down Mount Snowdon!!! Here is my journey.....

Well it certainly isn't a case of jumping on the bike and away you go!!!! I wish it were that simple? My sons Grandma had been diagnosed with cancer so I decided I should do it for a charity of her choice. She chose St Rocco's Hospice as they have been fantastic while she has been ill and a very worthy charity indeed; As you can see they even sent me a T-Shirt which was nice of them. So that bit is sorted, although I must add that fund raising is very, very hard work!!! My bike needed some work so I blagged Halfords into doing it half-price!!! Although I actually got it less than that!!!

Now I needed some kit! All sorts spring to mind but I have to be conscious of the fact that I have to carry everything on the bike!!!
  1. Waterproofs (It might be May but it is Wales!)
  2. Lightweight tent
  3. Good footwear
  4. Lightweight tools for the bike
The list can be endless but I can't let it be because of room and weight!!

Maps and Flyer's

That's what I had to take!!! Tent was tiny tho.....

So my kit, bike, dates and route all planned out. Everything is ready, except me!!!

Wishing me n badger luck
Due to the bike being in and out of Halfords I had done very little training for this trip; This did cause me some concern but it was too late now!!! Donations have been received and I really don't want to postpone so its a case of  'If your legs seize up or you get a constant stitch, your gonna have to ride through it mate!!!'; Great plan eh?? That's me all over though. Just a few days till I go so I arrange to have my son Josh an extra night and we went for a meal and spoke about the trip; He made me laugh because once he discovered a train goes up Snowdon he wanted lend me some cash to catch it!!! I explained bikes ain't allowed to do that and that's not the deal to do with the charity!!! Bless him though.

One last thing to do was to check my e-mails as I had contacted several campsites along my route asking did they do a discount if it was a charity ride etc? One reply! Ah well better than nothing I thought? Which one is it? Oh eck!!! Why did I e-mail them? This campsite is 90 miles away at a town/village called Llanfairfechan... 90 Miles!!!! On the 1st day!!! With all that weight on my bike!!  I had a deep sense of foreboding about this, that's a long way even with sufficient training! I e-mailed back and said 'that's fab,I see you Friday night'. Was that foolish? We shall see.

So I wake up about 6.30am and all I can do is drink coffee non-stop! Go the toilet about 5 times and time is ticking away! Sky is overcast and it's deja vu from last year when I went my sisters! Ready to rain soon as I set off.... I haul the bike outside and it's just gone 8am,have a quick cig and last swig of coffee and jump on the bike.
It's right about now that Michelle my Fiance starts to cry... I knew she would,am amazed she managed this picture of me with the tears running down her face. I tell her not to worry and I be OK; A last peck on the cheek and I am setting off.  I had mixed feelings at this point, felt bad for Michelle because she upset due to my crazy bike ride! Felt worried that I might not do the 90 miles to the 1st site! And a bit of fear that something could go wrong with the bike or my legs or something? All these feelings were soon left behind as I put my MP3 player on and headed towards Warrington; Was gonna be a long day!

Right from the start it was obvious the wind was going to be against me all day! It was strong too, between 13-20 mph at a guess. Nothing I could do about it though so I just got my head down and kept the legs spinning! Came across a very amusing sign on one of my 1st breaks though...

Continued on and going over the bridge near Connors Quay was lethal! Wow it was windy.... Got off and pushed it at the very top because the bike was being blown all over! Now I was getting somewhere though,on the coast road and heading towards Flint, then onto Prestatyn and then Rhyl; Stopped and had a good break on the Rhyl prom, the sea air was waking me up but not enough so I gulped a pro-plus down with a can of energy drink. It was 5pm by now and I still had about 20 miles to go till the campsite; doesn't sound far but the wind was still in my face and I was getting tired quickly by now; I rang the campsite and told them I will still be there, just wasn't sure when??? They were fine with that. So I swallowed a snickers bar whole and started off again,I had rested a tad too long though and my legs felt seized at first so I had to 'hit the wall' and keep spinning the legs till they remembered what to do! By now I had joined the bike lane alongside the A55 and what a great thing that is... Very smooth and no cars 'buzzing' you with a beautiful view of the Irish Sea.

Puffin Island

Well by now the sun is beginning to set but I know the campsite isn't too much further.... My legs ain't hurting but my bum is!!! The bike has been fine and I get a last look of the sea as I get sent inland by the cycle path towards my campsite (Platts Farm) for the night. The owner is waiting at the gate with a lovely smile; 'You must be badger?'. I can hardly catch my breath to say 'Yes'. Am shown my pitch and I set up and enjoy a beer before getting a well earned sleep. Mileage for the day was 90.38miles!!! Zzzzzzz... Oh and why oh why that campsite??? They let me stay for free!!! All that punishment to save a fiver eh!!!

Irish Sea sunset

Wake up the next day and the sun is shining and I feel pretty good; Scoff some frosties and have a wash; Pack the tent up,re-load the bike and set off. Destination today is Anglesey. First place I get to is the gateway to Anglesey (The Menai Bridge); It was certainly windy on it and I had to remove my baseball cap before it went for a swim in the straits below!!!
Menai Bridge

As the pictures show,it was a lovely day and although there was still some wind it was easier than the previous day. My original plan was to cycle anti-clockwise around Anglesey but after sleeping in that morning and feeling a tad tired I thought best to head straight for the South Stack on Holy Island.

Island on Menai Straits

My friend Anna asked me to look out for a nice quiet property on my travels, should she win the lotto!!! So I thought this island would be perfect for her.... First place to go before South Stack was the world famous longest named place in the world!!! It was very touristy!!! When I got there a coach load of American tourists turned up and one of them took a great picture of me,badger mascot and bike outside the gift shop. I didn't venture in as my funds were limited and I was getting hungry as my Frosties were beginning to wear off!!!!

So the pictures for the scrapbook are done and it's time to get some miles done! Unfortunately my mobile was getting a bit low on power so I stopped at a pub in Gaerwen and had a pint while it got some charge via the pubs plug socket.... £3 a pint though! Ouch!!! Had a nice chat with the locals and told them what I was doing and I got the usual response of 'Are you mad?'.... It was a bit crazy though because after the chat with them they turned and spoke amongst themselves in their native Welsh tongue!!! I know Wales is a country in its own right but still felt strange. Stopped for some chips at a quaint little village and pretty soon I was venturing onto Holy Island. First place I went was Tesco for supplies; Got some yogurts, energy bars, milk and 8 tesco lager!!! It's only 2% so I knew I be safe to ride in the morning!!!

Holy Island is a lovely little place, very laid back and a kind of 'go slow' feel to it. I asked some directions for the best way to South Stack from Holyhead and got sent onto a quiet country lane and before long I got to the HILL that takes you to it. When I say hill I ain't kidding! I thought about not bothering because I had just been tesco and added 8 cans of lager to the already overweight bike! Then I saw 3 other guys on touring bikes like myself and thought 'I will follow them up and use them as pacemakers'. They had very expensive bikes and kit but they struggled too and as they rested at the visitor centre I went past them and got to the top first! It wasn't a race but what the hell! My £90 bike can mix it with the 'Big Boys!'.

Am so glad I made the effort to get up there; Views were great and the wind was very cooling after that hard climb.

It was about 6pm at this point and I had planned to 'wild camp' on Holy Island as there are loads of little places to do so without disturbing wildlife or upsetting locals but all my picture taking and the odd text had eaten away at the mobiles battery again! I need a campsite to get some power in it.
I also needed to win a joke bet I had with Michelle before I left... She had said 'Oh your going to miss the Britain's Got Talent Final on Saturday coz you be in your little tent!'. I had more important things on my mind than that silly program but I will show her!!!

First of all lets hammer down that hill I struggled up!!! Did about 25mph and it would have been faster but its a single track road and cars were heading towards me so I took it easy. I didn't have a particular campsite in mind at this point but that area is swamped with them so I just thought I shall turn up at one and pitch up. About half an hour later I found one. Tyn Rhos camping site. So I went to the office and it was closed but then a lady turned up who opened the door and let me in. I knew nothing about this site so I explained that my budget is tight and that I am doing a charity ride etc etc..... She listened and even asked questions about it and then says 'well its only £7.25 a night'. Oh OK,that's fine, which it was.... but I was a little disappointed that she heard me out and what I was doing and no offer of a discount; She was actually quite rude and abrupt looking back now. Ah well,at least I got somewhere and it's getting late and it hasn't broke the bank so go get set up! Found a spot near a hedgerow and unloaded the bike and headed off to win my bet with Michelle.... On the way to the office I went past a pub (on site) so its time to rob some electricity! Oh and have a pint! They had what looked like a 80" LCD TV on the wall and BGT final was just starting!! Got my pint (£3!!!) plugged charger in and rang Michelle; Her first question was 'Where are you? Its noisy!'. 'I'm watching BGT in the pub hun'; Hahaha. One nil badger. I didn't watch all off it though but got the news that 'pudsey the dog' had won via Face book while I was in my tent having a few tesco lagers. Time to sleep because it's off to Llanberis in the morning.

Trearddur Beach

Well it is a new day and the sun is out so I put my 3/4 cargo pants on for my trip to Llanberis. I feel pretty good and my only pains are bum-ache and between the shoulder blades... I know there's going to be some hills along the way so I take it easy and enjoy the scenery of Anglesey; Such a lovely place and wish I had more time and funds to stay and explore for a few more days but Mount Snowdon is beckoning and waiting for me!!!
Cross the menai bridge back onto the mainland and head for Llanberis; Met a German cyclist along the way and he had just come from there. He looked at my loaded bike and said 'you are going to struggle on some of the hills my friend!'. Well when I know I am due to cycle up and down Mount Snowdon the next day,a decent hilly road ain't going to upset me!!! I didn't tell him what I was up to though, just thanked him for the info and set off. He was right though.... a very long and winding hill that went on for a good few miles; I even pushed on a few sections! It was a lovely day though and there wasn't a big distance to cover so I just ambled along and took my time.
Oooh not far....

So I get to this sign and the wind has really started to pick up!!! And I don't mean in my face or behind..... It's everywhere!!! I am cycling along and sudden gusts blast at me from different sides and it feels like someone is pushing me and the bike over or (worst of all) into the road!!!! After a while I have to concede defeat and push the bike for my own safety! This was after a gust blew me all the way over to the middle of the road! Thankfully no cars were coming up behind me at the time.... Then at long last I enter Llanberis. Just need to find the campsite now???

See a 'local' coming out of his house and ask for directions and he knows the place well; Gives me perfect directions but warns me that there's a very steep hill! Where have I heard that before??? He wasn't kidding though! It was a bloody monster! Got off and pushed (again!) and finally made it to Llwyn Celyn Bach Farm!!! Glad I am typing this and not saying it because my Welsh is shocking! It's a full working farm and there's a note on the door telling campers to set up as they are out working on the top fields. So I find a sheltered pitch as it's still windy and get the bike unloaded.
It's a shame it was so late in the day as I wanted to have a walk up the mountain path and have a quick look at the conditions and terrain for my attempt in the morning. Instead I decide to have a ride into the village and get some supplies and have a look around; It's a lovely little place with quaint tea rooms and lots of Outdoor clothing shops! Get supplies and head back to my tent just as the owners return; I speak with Fiona and explain what I am doing for charity and she agrees to charge me £1 for the night!!! What a lovely person; She also gives me some valuable directions for joining the path from the campsite as we are already 50 metres above the village! Excellent. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing and eating my tea and tons of choc bars so my energy levels are good for the morning!

Start of the Llanberis Path
Wake up at 7am ready to tackle the mountain. Got my backpack on full of my body armour for the descent, spare water, energy bars and waterproofs! It's quite warm and looks like it might be a good day; I had checked the weather via Internet and I knew it would be reasonable today until dinner and then some rain and possibly snow was going to hit the summit! That didn't matter to me as I had to be off there by 10am due to the voluntary bike rule in the summer months. Spoke to a fellow camper who was leaving that day and I set off on my mission.

Started off well and the surface was no problem for myself or the bike; I had set off with a few layers on but soon ditched these in the backpack as I worked up a sweat! After about half a mile I got to my first section of 'boulders!' The best way I can describe them is.... Try and imagine 1000's of pillows laid out side by side,all different sizes and height levels!!! And obviously made of stone!!! That's basically what it was like! Plus its going uphill. Some sections I was able to ride but there are a few points when it was just better to push as it saves energy. After a while the 'pillows' would go and it was just a rough track that was fine to ride but then 200 yards later the 'pillows' returned! This went on for about 2 miles until I got where you pass under the railway. I did a time check and I was going well,but then after the bridge the hill that faces you is not only steep but seems to go on forever and the surface is a loose gravel; A good example is that its as if a million roofing tiles have been smashed to bits and dumped on that part of the path! Added to that is the fact that I am entering clouds now so the 'tiles' are wet!! At first I could ride but as it got steeper and since I only weigh about 10 stone all I got was wheel spin... No traction whatsoever! Time to push!!!! (Again!). Pushing the bike is hard work and since mine is a steel framed one and not carbon fibre I am drinking loads of water! The path does start to level out after what feels like 2-3miles but it's probably more like half a mile in truth! It's my body that's making these figures up! Get on the bike and am getting some traction at last; Visibility has started to go bad though and there's a thick hill fog that just seems to have come out of nowhere? I am only doing about 5mph so it's not hindering me too much;

Every now and again there is a break in the cloud behind me and to the sides that gives some great views; It also reminds me how high up I am!!! The wind has also started to pick up quite a bit and the paths changed again! There are bigger rocks scattered about and big pieces of slate jutting out the ground waiting to rip an unsuspecting bike tyre to shreds!!! I weave in and out of the 'nasty' stuff while trying to look ahead and plan my route carefully. It takes lots of concentration and the hill fog is back with a vengeance!

I stop for a quick break and my body is a tad sore; Not just from the mountain but from the last few days of biking and camping! It's all catching up with me I think? I get back on the bike and crack on... Even though I cannot see anything ahead I just know I must be near the top!! The path gets thin at this point with drops either side! Its kinda like walking along a 'Dragons Spine' and there's weathered rocky outcrops jutting up into the sky! It looks like the surface of some distant planet like Mars!!! I can hear the Snowdon train struggling up the mountain somewhere behind me,can't see it because of the fog! I continue on and 'hello whats this?' Some steps... I think I am there? Carry the bike up and as the swirling mist moves out the way I can see the top!!!

Oh my word!!! I have done it! I can't believe it myself; Sure I knew I wouldn't quit but managing it and being there truly was a 'pinch me,am I dreaming?' moment!!!
Notice the tourists struggling behind me!!! I don't know the wind speed but it was BAD!!!!

Well I climb to the very top and there are no views to be had!!! Gutted, but it wasn't about the views,it was for the charity; I have a drink of Powerade and an energy bar and do a time check..... Oh bugger,it's almost 10am!!! Not much I can do about it now! As I am sat with my thoughts the train load of tourists appear from the visitor centre; The first couple to greet me think I am a hiker and as she talks to me she spots the bike! 'What the hell is a bike doing here? Is that yours? OMG!!!' It was brilliant and these American and Japanese tourists had their pics done with me???  And one of them kindly took this one of me. It was freezing and the windproof jacket went straight back on after he took it; Everyone headed into the visitor centre for a brew and getting ready to catch the train back down... I did too but I went in to warm my hands and put my body armour on for the descent! I didn't bother locking the bike up while it was in the foyer or outside!!!
The train left and apart from the staff I was the only person left up there! It was a nice feeling knowing I was the highest person in England and Wales at that time and then I realised my bike was the highest bike in Britain! Oh well I had best get myself back down the mountain and to my campsite. I get all ready and wrapped up and start my descent; Then I crapped myself as out the mist a fell runner came sprinting towards me!!! Said good morning and then it dawned on me that I was the first person to go up there without the help of the train!!! I snake my wheels through the shards of flint and boulders along the section I think of as the 'dragons spine' and get onto the SERIOUS hill! On the way up,huffing and puffing as I pushed the bike! I was in my mind mentally working out what it would be like going back down certain sections... And this part had raised a few issues! My brakes ain't disc brakes.... normal brake blocks! The surface is very loose, wet and slippy! And there's a bloody great drop either side! Although the path is quite wide (thankfully).

Then my worries disappear as the train crawls past with the next load of tourists..... One of them spots me and then before long the whole train load of passengers have got their faces up against the window gawping in disbelief!! The odd camera goes off as well! Hope they got my good side? So I set off laughing to myself at the reaction; I don't know how much the train is? But maybe I made those passengers feel it was worth it! Good talking point at parties 'nutter on bike up Snowdon!'.
You may all think to yourselves 'here is the good bit, going down!'. Hmmm... It is easier but it is so technical as you try to choose the right path and watch your speed and be wary of any sudden gusts of wind! I got some good speed up as the path cleared and not too many large rocks to contend with and I started to apply the brakes to slow up a little since I knew the loose scree kind of stuff was coming up.... What brakes??? Well they did work but its so damp up there they took a time to find any sort of grip; It was just like when a train slows down to stop at a station!!! This I knew was the steepest part though and I was nearly past it and down to the railway bridge; Went under the bridge and about 100 yards away my first sight of hikers!!! I was conscious of the fact that I had gone over the voluntary bike curfew,so I stopped and got off and decided to have a 5 min break while they went past; Don't want to upset anyone? It was a young American couple and they were in awe at what I had done, then they were thrilled to bits when I told them they were the first hikers I had seen,so therefor they would be the first hikers to the top that day!! They continued on their way,as did I,by now I was at the 'pillows!' My bike is a hard frame bike,no suspension whatsoever! I had to do this section slowly but at times there was a path to the side but this was right on the edge of a drop! With some careful manoeuvres it was OK though and I was going a fair speed when using the little paths. By now my hands and arms were killing because of all the braking and effort with the front wheel,it's tough coming down! Came across several other walkers, including a couple from my campsite, said hello etc... Got near the bottom and now I really was shifting! No need to pedal, gravity was taking care of it! As always I slowed up for hikers and everyone was friendly enough; Managed about 25-28mph on some sections,I really could have gone faster but I was near the bottom and that would be such a stupid place to come a cropper!!! Got to the village and sat on a bench and just sat there grinning to myself!!!  My solitude moment was disturbed by a couple I had seen up the mountain earlier! The lady said 'Oh I am glad your down safe' her husband added 'you are nuts!'. Ha ha.... I took it as a compliment and returned to my campsite.

I had planned to leave the same day but I was so tired I just couldn't be bothered!! I just wanted to chill in my tent the rest of the day and get some good food in me! I spoke to the owners and they let me stay again at no charge! And they gave me praise for my achievement which was nice. Went down into the village and got a big portion of chips and ate them at my tent, with some help from the resident hen!!!

Then I just enjoyed the views, did some texts and facebook status stuff,oh and added some pictures and relaxed after a hard day! I packed all my kit ready for the morning and got an early night. Dreaming of home, bed,TV,cooked meals and a good piss up when I get back!!!

Wake up the next morning and my tent was soaked!!! There had been a major storm that night and I had slept through the whole thing! It was still raining so I waited for a break in the weather and once it came I got the tent down,gave it a good shake to get the excess water off it and just packed it away even though it was still wet! Had no choice as the rain started again! I will worry about the tent when I get to Fron Farm,my destination for that day;
I took a last look at that beautiful mountain and set off ,I was upbeat and even though the weather was horrid I was feeling good; Just one more night of camping before getting home.

The road I rode along had been built along the valley floor, huge mountains either side looking menacing but also spectacular; There was a fair amount of snow on one particular peak which seemed crazy as at this point the sun had made an appearance; I stopped to get changed as I was overheating and opted for my 3/4 cargo pants as they comfy and lightweight. It was all uphill to the top of the pass and there was a visitor centre with toilets,so I used them and had a drink and bite to eat as I looked at the huge downhill section that lay before me!!! Oh this is gonna be fun! Scanned the MP3 for some suitable music (born to be wild by Steppenwolf) and gunned it!!! I tore down that hill for about 20 mins, catching up with the occasional car, which then sped up to save the embarrassment of a fully laden bike overtaking them! When the hill ended the road was just flat, there was very little wind so I was doing a reasonable 13-15mph.

The scenery was outstanding! Breathtaking is probably a better description,it truly was. Oh for more time and money I could tour around this place for weeks! Alas I have neither luxury and besides I was missing some home comforts; Started to hit some civilisation at last, the odd little village and a reasonably large town; Got some supplies and continued on but I had noticed my speed had dropped and I was exhausted??? This is what I called 'Snowdons Revenge!'... The only pains I had were the customary 'Arse Ache!' and some pains at top of back and shoulder blades, both caused by being in the same riding position. I did move around, wiggle bum, massage back,etc,etc.... to alleviate the aches but they still catch up in the end; This wasn't the revenge though; My legs were empty! They didn't hurt or ache, they just didn't have any energy? Strange sensation because you feel OK but no energy from waist down!!! Time for secret weapon; Cold water on face and neck, deep heat on the legs,pro-plus washed down with energy drink and a Snickers bar!! Did all that in 10 mins because if I stay rested for too long my legs start to seize up! Half hour after my mini cocktail of caffeine and sugar I am back in the game! Legs spinning and miles are tumbling, although Denbigh was a nightmare with some of its hills but some cracking downhill sections made up for it; Am about 6 miles from campsite and realise I forgot to buy some fags! (Yes I smoke!) Should be OK though since there are about 3 villages en-route; Not a shop in sight?? Blimey this is the sticks ain't it? I see a guy walking a dog and he suggest the pub near campsite, yea that should work. Get to the pub and a lady gets up to serve me; I tell her I would like to buy some cigs or use the vending machine if that OK? She looked gutted I didn't want to buy a drink; 'We don't sell cigs and vending machines are illegal in pubs!  Well I didn't know that at the time? My disappointment was obvious and a guy who sat there with his pint asked which direction I was heading; Explained I was heading for campsite, was tired and what I had done.... Then the barmaid pips in 'there's nothing for you here!' Blimey, how rude! I tell you she said it about 5 times while I was chatting with this guy; She reminded me of the barmaid of 'The Slaughtered Lamb' in American werewolf in London!!!
The guy took pity and gave me 3 cigs as the nearest place was Mold and I just wanted to get to the site; Said thanks and goodbye and that lady just scowled??? Wow! Major attitude or what! Got to Fron Farm campsite half hour later and my hosts were lovely... 'Pitch where you want, well done on a mammoth trip and donate our pitch fee for the charity'. My friend had rang them before hand and told them of my trip but they didn't know I had been up and down Snowdon on bike! Their faces were priceless! Unpacked the tent (which was still wet!) Gave it a good shake and used my dirty laundry to dry the bottom of it where I sleep. I had packed a spare tarpaulin so I used that on the floor too; Used the power shower (pure bliss) and I was asleep within half an hour! Dreaming of home and Michelle,Josh and my friends.

My North Wales/Anglesey and Mount Snowdon Tour planned!!!

Ok so this one has a 'sting in the tail'... Am gonna leave leigh and cycle just past Llandudno on day 1. Its about 85 miles!!! Then its onto Anglesey and i am going to travel Anti-Clockwise along the coast road all the way over to Holyhead and stay near the 'South Stack' thats about 60 miles. Next day is a simple coast road ride off Anglesey and onto the campsite at Llanberis(at the foot of Snowdon) Only about 40 miles that day... Theres a 'bloody' good reason why the miles have got less and less.... That night i am going to take all the kit off my bike and turn it back into a MTB... Then in the morning i am going to cycle up Mount Snowdon and back down!!! It should take me about 3hrs?  Then its back to my tent and check the bike over and put everything back on it and head off towards Mold the same day! About 50 miles,i be tired after 'Snowdon' so take it easy in pace! Next day is the last bit... about 50 miles to get home and PARTY!!!! The last day is always the easiest..... Anyway thats the plan and i doing it March/April 2012. Gonna be a laugh!!!

470 mile solo ride from Leigh,Lancashire to Cromer,Norfolk.(And Back!!!)

Hi all.
Hard in training(notice the budweiser!)
I am a bit new to this so if my page a bit cr@p i am sorry.... Ok so my name is Badger, well yea its a nickname! i am 38,i smoke and have never undertaken such a challenge before.... Yea i have done loads of mad stuff like camping in dec on mountains etc... but a full-on tour was a new concept?  So i had the bike which is a Trax TR1 rigid MTB from Halfords... £90.  Yep i can hear alarm bells too!!!! So then i spent the same amount of cash on turning it into a touring bike! That was rack, panniers, double lights,tool/puncture kit, water bottle, lock, bungee's,gel seat and the all important computer to track progress..... So the bike is sorted, now its my turn! Well yes i do smoke and i don't follow a balanced diet but i am very active and have done plenty of hiking and stuff so i feeling good and fairly confident!! OK i am a tad worried in my ability but i am equally worried can the bike hack it?  So i got as many hours training as i could on the bike and then with a week to go the seat snapped!!!  Halfords fixed it (warranty) for free. Damn!  No excuses to not go! Just kidding,i couldn't wait to hit the road but it was a weird mix of excitement and worry of the unknown???

Aug 1st- I left the GF's in Leigh at 9am and all i had to do was make it to Chesterfield for the 1st day; I have a friend there who had the promise of a warm meal, bed and bath.... an offer i couldn't refuse,i just had to get there 1st! The bike was heavy (25kg of kit) and yes i could feel it but once i was moving no probs,it was perfectly balanced too which is very important. I had packed more than i would for an ordinary tour since once i got to Cromer i would be staying for 2 weeks at my sisters and meeting my great nieces for the 1st time. So i had packed extra clothes plus tent and sleeping bag.... Hence the weight of the bike!!!

All was going well and i had chose to take the cheshire route down to Macclesfield and then along 'The Snake Pass' to Buxton!!! Was i mad? Certifiable i reckon.... That road is a killer for road racers never mind a fully loaded tourer! The method in my madness was that if i can do this on day one the rest of the trip will seem easy! A kind of 'make me or break me' attitude. So got to Macc with no problems and now it was time to test my theory!

Now I'm getting worried!!!

So off i go to attack one of the toughest roads in the area.
Plenty of other cyclists around but they all on road bikes, not another tourer in sight? My guess is they all got more sense! God it was tough and i don't mind admitting that i did get off and push on more than one occasion. I was exhausted and still half a mile from the top but it spured me on knowing a nice cold pint awaited it me at the 2nd highest pub in England (The Cat & Fiddle). I finished off the last of my water and dug deep until i got to the pub.... It was shut!!! I was mortified.... the pint could wait till another pub but i needed water badly... I went round the back looking for an outside tap but didn't find one. Then a family pulled up and started to set up a picnic on one of the benches nearby; Being the cheeky sod i am,i approached and asked could i buy some water/pop/anything wet? They were American tourists and gave me two bottles of ice cold buxton water from their cool-box for free! That was the best tasting water i have ever drank! I finished one bottle while i took in the scenery, god its beautiful up there...

Hydrated and ready to fly to buxton

Now for the fun bit... going downhill into Buxton. I had to watch my speed because with all that weight its pretty scary but was still doing 28+mph in places(i beat this later!). Got to buxton and found a pub to top water up and have a pint! Got the map out and checked my route and all was good. it started to cloud over as i left the pub so i set off at a brisk pace; More hills to head up but only slight long ones and yes it started to rain.. it was more like a half hour storm and i got pretty wet but i wasn't that concerned as i knew my stop-over that night was at a house. Got to my friends just gone 7pm and a meal was on the table with a cold beer and the bath was running. Thats the hard bit done...

Aug 2nd- Woke up and felt fine(was worried the legs would be stiff). My hosts did me a full English and i may have had too much because i could still taste it by dinner time! My goal today was a campsite just west of Boston,Lincolnshire. So i needed to get onto the A617 and go through Mansfield,Newark and Sleaford. Easier said than done! There were diversions all over the place and by the time i got onto it i had wasted about 3hrs and only covered about 18 miles!!! I had been sent down B-roads along with all the other traffic and i couldn't get past most of the vehicles because there wasn't room!!! Not the best of starts but oh well,i was on the main road now and was going at a good pace,it was a sunny clear day too. One high point of the diversions was a speed camera i set off going through a village!!! I didn't know i was going that fast!!!

34.9mph!!!

I needed more supplies and being on a budget i was trying to avoid going in services so i decided to call in at Newark. What a lovely town,i have been past before but have never stopped and didn't have time to stay for long this time either! I will return one day though and have a walk around that castle.

newark castle.

Got the supplies and just got into a good pace, the weather was still good as i passed Sleaford and i was now on the A17 towards Kings Lynn. That road is very very busy... a real truck-fest. With the weather being good the traffic wasn't scary and from time to time there was a mini hard shoulder that i used as my unofficial cycle lane. This was completly different than day one,the roads are perfectly flat and straight, quite boring really but i was making good time now. Came off the A17 and went down A1121 towards Hubberts bridge where the campsite was. It was then that the sky began to cloud over,it just looked overcast though so i wasn't worried. Had to cross a level crossing and i knew the campsite wasn't far from here; Unfortunatly a goods train had just gone through and traffic was heavy on both sides,so much so that cars were hiding the sign for the campsite so unbeknown to me i had cycled past it! After about 4 miles i consulted the map and realised my mistake... Now i had a dillema because i was tired and i didn't want to go back on myself, plus i was still heading towards Norfolk which was good(less miles tomorrow). I decided to push on towards Holbeach as i knew there were plenty of other campsites in that area. The sky had turned black at this point and it was obvious a storm was coming, add to that i had a 10mph headwind and my legs were aching! Im not adverse to wild camping if need be but in Lincolnshire there are no woods!!! Its just flat everywhere, then the rain started spitting, then lightning... 'Oh god' I'm gonna get soaked! I saw some out-buildings down a lane so flew down there and joy of joy's there's an open barn! Within 30 seconds of getting under its tin roof a monsoon hit Lincolnshire!!! Considering it was August and after such a lovely sunny day it was a real shock. The rain didn't stop for about an hour so i used that time to eat and ring the GF (even she could hear the rain down the phone!). The rain eased and opposite the barn were industrial units and a farmhouse... the sky still looked suspect and any campsite i could find now would be water-logged! I found the farmer and asked could i pitch in the barn? He agreed and just said don't leave a mess!

You will notice two things from my next picture.... The tent is a cheap summer tent,i took this because it was small, lightweight and it was August!!! You will also notice that this is not a traditional Hay Barn!!! It had trailers in it and the ground was dust and rocks!!! I kicked the rocks away set the tent up,snugged in my bag and had a beer and rang home. Its crazy how things work out because earlier i was kicking myself for missing the campsite but had i found it my tent and me and my kit would have got drenched!!! Theres no way that tent could have took that much rain!!! So i went to sleep smiling to myself how lucky i had been...

Badger guarding the tent
Aug 3rd- Got up early(about 7.15am) Hadn't had a great nights sleep due to the storm returning, tractors coming back till 11pm and the floor feeling like a pebbled beach!!! Oh and a couple of owls having a chat across the barn. At least my kit was dry and apart from the puddles along the dirt track you wouldn't have guessed it had rained all night because the sun was up and hardly any cloud! Packed everything up and set off,i was hungry though but after 10 miles i came across one of those lay-by truck cafes. Ahhh strong coffee with 2 sugars and a saus and bacon barm. Well the girl serving put it on half a baguette when she found out how far i had travelled at no extra cost!! Love it when you meet people like that. So belly full and caffine-fueled off i go into Norfolk... Not far now and i decided on a average pace and took in the scenery and stopped at the odd little village store for energy drink and cereal bars. I also would ask people who were in there gardens to top up my water from time to time. Its a lovely county and everyone very friendly. There is one thing you will notice about Norfolk and it can be quite disheartening when you are on a bike. The road signs don't tell the truth!!! I mean the milage ones; It goes back to WW2,with the threat of a nazi invasion on the east coast all the road signs were taken down but they were not all put back in the right places!!! Its true! I went past a sign that said Cromer 17 miles and then 2 miles later Cromer 18 miles!! Anyway history lesson over. I got to Holt (10 miles from Cromer) and had a pint; The miles had taken there toll because they felt like lead, they were running on empty! So i had a good stretch and after half an hour i set off, that last part seemed to fly by and god when i saw that sign!!! Oh joy, although my sister lives the other side and its another 2 mile! I didnt care because i had done it! I got to a very shocked sisters at 3pm.

This sign was a bit grubby so i went to another the next day

An old lady took this hence the angle! She didn't know how use the camera! lol

Holiday time- Well i had made it and i was going to have a couple of weeks holiday and then head back. You would have noticed the badger mascot(he hard to miss!) I took him for the occasions when nobody was around to take my picture and he served a far greater purpose on the way home??? So whats so special about Cromer? Well i have lived and worked there and its beautiful as my pictures will show.

I also met lots of characters and of course my great nieces who until now i had never met. They took the badger home and washed him for me during my stay which was very sweet.

Time to leave for home! Sob!!!
Got the bike ready and kissed family bye and set off. I had checked the weather and it was forcast rain early evening in Norfolk but i had worked out i should be in Lincolnshire by then and miss it altogether? That was the plan. I also didn't want to go back through Norfolk the same way so i opted to go by the coast road,it adds about 8 miles on my trip but its very scenic and would be worth the extra effort. I wasn't wrong,it was picturesque and the sun was shining. Went through some lovely villages along the way and then found a tank!!! Its parked outside the Muckleburgh Collection in Weyborne.

FIRE! My new toy...lol

No time to sight-see so off i go through Wells and then rather than go through to Hunstanton i decide to cut down and join the A148. About 30 miles done and it dawns on me i have left my energy/cereal bars in my sisters fridge!!! Not a good start so stopped at a little village store and the only thing they had that was any good was a Club multi-pack!!! Oh well no time to dwell and the suns disappearing and dark clouds form just as i approach the Lincolnshire border! Deja-vu anyone??? While in Cromer i had got the farmer a postcard and was going to drop off on the way as a thank you... You can see whats coming cant you??? Well it starts to rain quite badly and im on the A17,wagons covering me with spray from the back as they hurtle past and a 15mph headwind making sure i get a good soaking from the front!!! At this point i am worried about my kit,its slightly waterproof and my clothes are in bags but there's a lot of spray!!! Plus my sleeping bag on top of the tent and the badger on top of the sleeping bag. Last thing i need is a wet bag!! Get to the farm just as the sky clears(typical) looking like a drowned rat! Farmer drives towards me and stops and says 'are you staying again?' Yes please is my reply as i hand him his slightly damp postcard. He laughed and drove off,he returned a short time later and took me in to his yard and showed me a toilet block, hot running water and even a plug for my mbl charger!!! This is how the bike was loaded as i went through the rain..

The moment of truth.... How wet was my kit? Well the clothes at the bottom of both bags were wet!! I wasn't that shocked... What about the tent and the sleeping bag? The tent was fine because i always have the groundsheet on the outside when i roll it up. The sleeping bag??? Dry as a bone? WTF??? Ahh... The badger is so wet i had to wring him out!!! lol. He had took all the rain and protected the bag. He had done his job.
Settled down to another uncomfy night on the gravel... Zzzzzz.

Next day i woke up late(8am) packed up quick and made my way to the A17. Had to get to my friends in chesterfield. Binned the trainers i had worn the day before because the hadn't dried out overnight and they were an old pair that i had taken in that eventuality so that didn't matter, plus it was less weight to carry. Found another lay-by cafe (food and caffine) and hammered down the road at a swift pace. I went a slightly different route from Mansfield after that last fiasco and i got there about 5.30pm; One major drama was a scaffold flatbed wagon scraped the side of my panniers!!! and i was in that little hard shoulder,i was shook up but bloody fuming too,his wheels were over the white line? Close call!. Had another good meal, beer, bath and then bed.

The last day- I opted for 2 slices of toast because that breakfast was too heavy last time!! And i had changed my route too; No way was i going along the 'Snake Pass' again! This time i was going along the A623 towards Chapel-en-le-Frith. It was a hard slog getting there, plenty of hills but i knew 'what goes up,must come down!' The weather was fine and wind was light, great conditions. I had a welcome home party planned for 7pm that night which i couldn't wait to get to. Planned to be back by 5.30pm though and the GF said she be at my flat from 3pm. So skimmed by Le-Frith and got onto the A6 and stopped for a bite to eat,a cig and a drink. Looked round and saw a sign Manchester 20 miles!!! It had just gone dinner? Blimey Leigh is only 14 miles from Mcr... I don't know where the miles had gone that day and i didn't care? I was well ahead of time! Jumped on the bike and gunned it. The A6 is a fantastic road from here because when it wasn't going downhill it was flat... I was averaging about 18-20mph! Had a quick stop in Disley for some energy drink, necked it and carried on through Stockport and onto Mcr. Stopped at Air and Space museum for my last redbull and blueberry muffin and text the GF 'i might be early'. I didn't wait for a reply and headed for the Lanc's road. I eased down at this point,i wasn't tired,i was just reflecting and remembering what a fantastic trip it had been... It was kind of sad that it was nearly over to be honest; sort of like the feeling when you go home after a holiday... Gutted but glad to be back. Came off the lanc's and down Mcr road and then i saw it? The sign for Leigh...

Home at last!!!

I arrived home at 3.30pm and my GF was in shock!!! Got a shower and changed and then had what was supposed to be a bit of  low key party..... Hmmm. Went to bed at 6am!!! It must have been the adrenaline and red-bull.... What a journey.

AFTER-THOUGHT.... Would i do it again? Yes absolutly.... I am already planning a different trip as i type this.  It doesn't take years of training or a £1000+ bike and top-spec kit to do what i did. I have proved it can be done on the cheap with the right frame of mind and determination.
In the end i had done 470 miles due to the diversions and the detour to the barn(twice) and by taking the coastal route back. It should have been 440 miles. Those extra miles were some of the high points of the trip though so i wouldn't change a thing. And the most amazing thing was the bike! No problems with it whatsoever... not even a puncture!!!  Two quick points for anyone doing the same... 1-If you take a backpack dont have much weight in it or you WILL get back/neck pain....    2- If you have the funds put road tyres on; I did it with 'knobblies' but that may be why i didn't get a puncture???

Hope you enjoyed reading this as much as i did doing it. Happy Trails.
